| Samoa Signs Final WTO Accession Bilateral Negotiation | |||||||||
Samoa has now concluded all WTO accession bilateral market access negotiations. The conclusion was marked by the signing of the services bilateral agreement on Friday 16th September 2011 at the US mission in Brussels, Belgium. The US Ambassador to the European Union, Mr. William Kennard signed on behalf of the United States, and Samoa’s Ambassador to Belgium, H.E. Tuala Falani Chan Tung signed on behalf of the Independent State of Samoa. The US becomes the seventh member of the WTO that Samoa has completed bilateral services negotiations with, the other countries include Australia, Canada, China, the EU, Japan and New Zealand. Samoa is set to conclude the WTO accession process at the end of 2011 with the accession package expected to be tabled, at the latest, for the consideration of the WTO General Council at the 8th WTO Ministerial Meeting in Geneva in December 2011. |

| Samoan Students Receive Chinese Scholarship Awards | |||||||||
A total of 20 students from Samoa were awarded scholarship opportunities to study in China commencing in September 2011. 13 of these students received awards under the Chinese scholarship scheme which is administered on an annual basis through the joint efforts of the Scholarships, Training and Bilateral Division at MFAT and the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Samoa which falls under the bilateral assistance provided by the Chinese Government to developing countries such as Samoa. An additional 7 Samoan students were successful recipients for Chinese scholarships under the China/PIF regional awards. |

| Fisheries Ministers from the 17 Pacific nations will meet at the 7th Session of the Forum Fisheries Committee Meeting in Apia from the 20th to the 21st July 2011 | |||||||||
The Meeting is chaired by Hon. Le Mamea Ropati, Minister for Agriculture and Fisheries of Samoa taking over the chairmanship from Papua New Guinea. The FFC Ministerial session, is the highest decision-making body for the Pacific Island Forum Fisheries Agency, will over the course of this session be considering, noting and approving the outcomes of the earlier Officials Forum Fisheries Committee meeting for onward transmittal/reporting to the next Forum Leaders meeting in September...more |
